I write today in strong support of the International Institute of Asian Studies. At a time when global challenges—from climate change to geopolitical conflicts—demand informed and engaged leaders, the role of an ‘international’ approach to higher education has never been more critical. Reducing support for this vital institution would undermine the university’s commitment to preparing a whole generation of learners for leadership in an interconnected world.
The Institute has long been a hub for interdisciplinary learning, equipping students with the knowledge, language skills, and cultural understanding necessary to navigate complex global issues as evident in its Asia-in-the-World focus. Through its collaborative programs, research initiatives, and international partnerships, IIAS fosters critical thinking and cross-cultural communication—skills that are indispensable in today’s global economy and diplomatic landscape. The work of IIAS has been trusted and supported by a number of globally recognised and committed donors, which further illustrates the value of the work undertaken at IIAS.
The Institute holds a unique place and vision that reaches out across geographical divides, and political structures, bringing together the sharpest minds, through cross cutting initiatives that are outside academic silos and disciplinary belonging, addressing and approaching, growing and developing, the capacity of many, to belong and contribute to this world – a lesson in planetary civics, which stands out as an exemplar for us all.
Beyond its academic contributions, the Institute plays a crucial role in public engagement, offering events, lectures, and collaborations that allow for an intercultural understanding of world affairs, especially among the broader community, in Europe where it is uniquely located. The Institute produces work that informs policy, strengthens international relations, and promotes global cooperation and connectivity, enhancing Leiden university’s standing as a leader in global education.
Now more than ever, we must invest in institutions that prepare the communities of our world to address the world’s most pressing challenges, that affect us all equally, as the pandemic proved to us in the last five years. I urge decision-makers to recognize the International Studies Institute as a vital resource and to ensure its continued support for future generations.
Best wishes,
