We invite preferably young or mid-career researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities to apply for a 12-month IIAS fellowship. We also welcome visiting senior researchers and strategic collaborators. Indologists may apply for a Gonda Fund fellowship. In addition, IIAS supports a Professorial Fellowship for the Chair of Taiwan Studies at Leiden University and IIAS.

IIAS (& IIAS/FMSH) Fellowship
Would you like to join the IIAS researchers community? We invite preferably young or mid-career researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities to apply for a 12-month fellowship. Applicants may also apply for an extra two months of research at the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH) in Paris, in the framework of an additional combined IIAS/FMSH fellowship.
Eligibility
The position of affiliated research fellow is intended for outstanding researchers (see the Terms and conditions) from around the world to work on an important aspect of Asian studies research in the Social Sciences and Humanities. Interdisciplinary interests are encouraged.
Research focus
IIAS is a globally oriented institute that actively promotes new and interdisciplinary approaches to Asian Studies. The institute is engaged in several initiatives that open dialogue between academe and society to substantively link scholarly expertise with practitioners’ experience.
IIAS invites applications for developing innovative research, writing, and/or civically engaged, collaborative projects along our three thematic clusters 'Asian Cities', 'Asian Heritages' and 'Global Asia'.

Visiting Researchers & Strategic Collaboration Fellowships
IIAS welcomes visiting senior researchers and strategic collaborators who wish to conduct their research, develop ideas for new collaborative projects, or develop new academic curricula in the field of Asian studies.
Researchers from the Social Sciences and Humanities, funded by their institutions or who hold a research grant, and would like to be hosted by IIAS, may apply via the Visiting Researchers & Strategic Collaboration Fellowships application form.
Gonda Fund
Each year IIAS reserves a number of places for Indologists who have been awarded a fellowship by the J. Gonda Foundation. These fellowships are intended for promising young Indologists at the post-doctorate level to spend a period of three to six months at IIAS.
About The J. Gonda Foundation
The J. Gonda Foundation is a foundation of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) that supports the scholarly study of Sanskrit, other Indian languages and literature, and Indian cultural history. The Foundation has been funding scholarly publications and re-issues of existing works since 1992. Other activities include the annual Gond Lecture.
The Foundation’s assets consist of the estate of Indologist J. Gonda, who was a member of the Academy.
Other funding options by the J. Gonda Fund
In addition to the fellowships for research at IIAS as described above, the Gonda Fund also covers funding for:
- a project or publication in Indology by researchers or scientific publishers
- PhD student grants for promising PhD students for a special research project, a working visit abroad, or another activity.

Professorial Fellowship for the Chair of Taiwan Studies at Leiden University
We invite applications for the Chair of Taiwan Studies at Leiden University and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS). The Chair offers a five-month Professorial Fellowship for a visiting scholar specialising in Taiwan Studies, who will teach and conduct research at Leiden University and IIAS in the first semester of the 2025-2026 academic year.
