As an independent researcher from Kuwait specializing in the preservation of craft knowledge, I found the approach of IIAS, particularly its Humanities Across Borders (HAB) initiative, to be both refreshing and innovative. Last summer, I had the privilege of experiencing this firsthand at the ICAS conference in Surabaya. True to its name, Humanities Across Borders exemplified leadership through a spirit of openness and inclusivity. What stood out to me was their remarkable versatility and eagerness to engage with knowledge seekers, transcending traditional boundaries between academics and practitioners. They offered innovative ways to approach and interact with knowledge, fostering a more dynamic and inclusive intellectual environment.
The Craft Knowledge Roundtable, the Craft Voices exhibition, and the various HAB panels demonstrated a genuine commitment to redefining our relationship with knowledge. These initiatives showcased a sincere effort to challenge conventional paradigms, proving that knowledge can indeed transcend borders. This approach not only inspires hope but also signals a meaningful shift toward a more inclusive, respectful, and collaborative engagement with knowledge—one that values diverse perspectives and fosters mutual understanding.
