The geopolitics returns in the 21st century with energy security concerns and strong economic integration in the age of globalization. The rise of China's power and its global consequences imply not only an adjustment of its bilateral relations with other great powers, but reshaping of new world order and geopolitical rivalries, particularly in Central Eurasian region.
From a Chinese perspective, China's geopolitical environment has been getting worse in the post-cold War era. The neighboring region, the energy-rich central Eurasia with its unstable politics and societies, has raised great challenges to china's national interests, bringing about more and more geopolitical challenges to Chinese policy makers.
What are the China's main interests and challenges in CEA and the Caspian Region? How could China's trade and investment in CEA promote its geo-strategic interests in this region? Could the Shanghai Cooperation Organization play a balancing role against the American geopolitical challenges? On the basis of assumptions of classical and critical geopolitics, this project will talk about the security challenges of CEA and how China's would respond geopolitically in the context of the changing balance of great powers.
