Wang Ning is an urban planner who works at the China academy of urban planning and design (CAUPD) from 2010 till now. He received his master's degree in Urban Planning from Xi’an university of architecture and technology. He is specialized on urban design and participated in many projects in China, for example" The comprehensive planning of Liang-jiang new district in Chongqing" and "The central area urban design in Chongqing Liang-jiang new district”. In addition, he was responsible for many projects such as “Tongchuan new district overall urban design" and " Chongqing Jiu-long peninsula urban design". Recently, he involved in multiple projects and researches about coordinated urban & rural development and peri-urban design.

At present, many Chinese cities are blind sprawling. And in this expansion process, the peri-urban is always the most dynamic, but also the most concentrated area of various contradictions. On the one hand, this area has strong development aspirations of “top-down” and “bottom-up”. On the other hand, rural landscape and context are suffering sustained damage. In other words, the pressure of its environmental protection is increasing day by day.

Currently, many cities are trying to solve this problem. Meanwhile, their thoughts are moving from “continuation of extensive development” or “passive protection” to “protection and development composite model”. Based on ecological protection and control as basic principles, they hope to excavate the value of agriculture and landscape resources, release the towns and villages development demands, after that keep balance between the protection and development. However, the implementation of this idea is still facing a lot of problems both on planning methodologies and practical level.

As a matter of fact, Randstad, Almere and other regions in Netherlands have a long history and advanced experience in dealing with such issues, which has an important reference to peri-urban development in China. This research is based on practical problems in China. It will systematically analyze and study the advanced experience, particularly explore the green innovation and development path in peri-urban area.
