R.H. van Gulik (1910-1967) was a famous sinologist who had many collections and writings on Chinese lute (an ancient seven strings musical instrument), chess, calligraphy and painting. My research is to understand and assess the value of his collections, as well as to discuss the insights of R.H. van Gulik, especially in regard to the Chinese lute. I will give Western people the opportunity of experiencing what Chinese lute, chess, calligraphy and painting have added to Chinese culture. At the same time, I will help Chinese people learn more about this well-known sinologist, and his contributions to Chinese and Western culture.
