Husain Mustahid is working on his forthcoming book, Success and masculinity in Muslim men of colour: Findings on Bangladeshi-Canadian youth.
This monograph illustrates the ways in which young Muslim, Canadian men from immigrant households navigate the pressures placed upon them as both carriers of tradition and a yardstick for measuring cultural and familial “success” and “achievement” within the context of global migration. The goal of this monograph is to demonstrate the lived experience of Bangladeshi-Canadian youth in the GTA, paying special attention to the socio-economic expectations resulting from the migration process and how they navigate the demands and pressures that come with cultural traditions, strict Islamic observances and the new opportunities presented by their new lives in North America.
The findings presented in the monograph offer evidence-based accounts of social issues (e.g. systemic racism, mental health issues and islamophobia) in the visible minority diaspora community. Policy-makers, the private sector and civil society can leverage this information to incorporate recent immigrants into Canada’s economic and social progress. Importantly, the significance of an increasing rate of suicide in visible minority social groups within a diaspora community stretches beyond Toronto and Canada to the wider parts of the world.
