The main objective of my post.doc project is to investigate how the rise of class divisions emerging within processes of globalization through corporate-led economic growth, affect, and are affected by, local cultural economic practices embedded in social relations and institutions, and in what ways new forms of differences based on material wealth and new consumption patterns intersects with caste and gender in producing new paths for social mobility within the social hierarchy of caste in Bali, Indonesia. The emergence of class in contemporary Bali coexists with the revival of the traditional caste hierarchy represented by the Bali-Hindu nationalist movement known as ‘Ajeg Bali’.
