Gandhāra has long been known as a important region in the history of Buddhism, but until recently our knowledge of Buddhism in this area lacked direct witnesses to the scriptures belonging to the golden era of this culture which is well known through Gandhāran Art and Architecture. The several recent discoveries of Gandhāran manuscripts now provide the critical data which had been missing from this picture. As work on editing and translating these documents continues, we must reassess our understanding of Gandhāran Buddhism, fully integrating the work of the different fields concerned with this fascinating area.
The present research topic makes a contribution to this goal, by presenting a series of public lectures and text-reading seminars that focus on different aspects in this study of Gandhāran Buddhism.
