Professorial Fellowship for the Chair of Taiwan Studies at Leiden University and IIAS

We invite applications for the Chair of Taiwan Studies at Leiden University and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS).

The Chair offers a five-month Professorial Fellowship for a visiting scholar specialising in Taiwan Studies, who will teach and conduct research at Leiden University and IIAS in the first semester of the 2025-2026 academic year.

To facilitate the Taiwan Studies Programme at Leiden University, the Department of International and Cross-Strait Education of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (DICE, Taiwan), the Faculty of Humanities and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) have jointly established a Chair of Taiwan Studies, based at the Faculty of Humanities. 

The Chair provides a Professorial Fellow position for a visiting scholar in Taiwan Studies, preferably, but not exclusively, in the fields of Shared Heritage Practices, Urban Studies or the study of Global Asia, being the focal areas of IIAS. 

Conditions and responsibilities

The five-month fellowship begins in September 2025 and is open to applicants from universities and research institutes in Taiwan or elsewhere with an established track record in Taiwan Studies research and demonstrable knowledge of one or more languages of Taiwan. Candidates with a full professorial position at their home institution whose research focuses on Taiwan and preferably covers either of the fields mentioned above are welcome to apply. 

The Professorial Fellow will be regarded as a visiting scholar and will engage in teaching and research activities at  the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) and IIAS.

DICE will provide the Professorial Fellow with a monthly allowance and a round-trip airline ticket (direct flight only). Additionally, the Leiden University Faculty of Humanities and IIAS will provide the Professorial Fellow with accommodation, office facilities, and support, including funding, for one seminar.

The Professorial Fellow may also invite one master’s or PhD student affiliated with their home institution for a short-term study or exchange visit to Leiden during the fellowship. Accommodation and office facilities will be provided for a maximum of one month.
 

Application

Your application should include the following:
- motivation letter
- a research proposal related to Taiwan Studies
- a syllabus for an advanced BA or MA course on Taiwan.

Applications must be submitted to the Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium at belgium@mail.moe.gov.tw.

Preference will be given to applications that include proposals for a teaching course at the BA or MA level.
