Leiden University and IIAS Delegation Visit Airlangga University
In early May 2023, a delegation from Leiden University traveled to Indonesia to visit Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in Surabaya and strengthen their existing partnership.
The President of Leiden University Board, Annetje Ottow, the director of IIAS, Philippe Peycam and delegates from the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) also attended this visit.
During this visit, representatives from both institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which covers student and staff exchanges, joint research, publications, conferences, and projects in the fields of social sciences, culture, economics, medicine, science, and technology.
In addition, an MoU for the International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) 13 was signed between the director of Airlangga Institute for Indian Ocean Crossroads (AIIOC), Dr. Lina Puryanti and the director of IIAS at Universitas Airlangga Surabaya on 8 May 2023. This agreement solidifies the arrangements for ICAS 13, which is scheduled to take place from 28 July to 1 August 2024, in the Surabaya, Indonesia.
Following the visit to UNAIR, Dr. Philippe Peycam, Dr. Elena Paskaleva (Coordinator Asian Heritage Cluster at IIAS, and Assistant Professor at LIAS) and other Leiden University delegation members, traveled to Yogyakarta to visit Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM); where they signed an MoU for a Double Degree MA programme in “Critical Heritage Studies of Asia and Europe” on 9 May 2023.
This Double Degree includes a one-year MA programme in Asian Studies at FHL, and a concurrent two to three-year MA programme at Arch-FIB-UGM. The programme offers selected graduate students from the participating universities the opportunity to obtain two MA degrees – one from Leiden University and one from a partner university in Asia – and a Certificate for the Double Degree in Critical Heritage Studies of Asia and Europe, issued by IIAS.
