Annual meeting of the European Alliance for Asian Studies (EAAS)

27 October 2022

On the 27th and 28th of October, 2022, the annual meeting of the European Alliance for Asian Studies (EAAS) was hosted by the Centre for Research in Anthropology (CRIA) at the Museu do Oriente in Lisbon, Portugal.

During these two days, delegates of European partner institutes discussed how mutual collaboration can strengthen Asian Studies at European universities (and beyond), and about communication and knowledge dissemination strategies. Two guest presenters spoke on the themes of “academic freedom” and “advocacy & institutional support.” Chaired by Britta Ohm (Academic Freedom Space), the wider implications of “academic freedom” were discussed such as cancel culture, self-censorship, decolonisation of academic practices, freedom of access to resources, critical thinking, and precarity. Gabi Lombardo (European Alliance for Humanities and Social Sciences) gave an online presentation about strategies and how to strengthen/consolidate the EAAS as an institutional entity, and about (funding) opportunities within the framework of the European Union.

Concluding the meetings, delegates enjoyed a guided tour through the Museu do Oriente and The Macau Museum.
