White Snake in Indonesia
Lunch lecture by IIAS Research Fellow Joshua Stenberg
This presentation considers an aspect of Stenberg's work in progress, adding to existing recent work on the global transnational movements of Chinese narratives. Various iterations of the Chinese White Snake legend in Indonesia will be introduced, dating from the late colonial period until the recent present, and including literary adaptations, cinema, comic books. An especial focus will be on the musical theatre piece Opera Ular Putih by Jakarta's Teater Koma, and the potential for its political interpretations.
