The Lecture

Human societies are drawing numerous (and unique) benefits from automation, robotics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Still, these technologies may, in the near future, also bring serious changes to the manmade world. Especially, new AI innovations that are empowered with computer models like Deep Learning and Neural Networks may potentially turn the unreal (science fiction) into a reality. The impacts of the increasing role of independently acting machines in human life may bring several changes in our contemporary ways of living. In the literature, the effect of AI on society is commonly discussed in terms of AI benefits and concerns. Whilst the advancements in AI (and hence its consequential impacts) are regarded as an irreversible phenomenon, governments strive to ensure that "AI in society" exists only as "good AI," with only benefits and without causing harm. However, mere government action may not adequately address concerns about AI. There is an urgent need that every stakeholder in society shall comprehend the metamorphic changes that AI may soon trigger in our societies and collaborate to create safe, inclusive, and sustainable cities.

This discussion aims to unbundle the causal relationship between the use of AI in daily life and some of its (ethical) associated concerns. Arguments generated during this discussion will contribute to the ongoing debates about multi-stakeholder collaboration for preserving safety, inclusiveness, and sustainability in digitalized societies.

The Speaker

Somesh Sharma works as Environment and Sustainable Development Planning specialist at the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam. His responsibilities at IHS include conducting research, teaching courses, providing advisory services, and delivering training and capacity-building programs. Somesh's primary research centers around the Governance of Artificial Intelligence in Smart Cities. He teaches a range of courses, including Urban Management focusing on Good Governance for Complex and Contemporary Cities, Urban Management Tools for Climate Change, and Local Government Finance.

Primary research project

This talk by Somesh Sharma is based on his PhD research project titled Governance of Artificial Intelligence: A Multi-Stakeholder Approach for Safe, Inclusive and Sustainable Smart Cities. This PhD project aims to explain the causal relationship between 'the use of AI' and 'societies’ (ethical) concerns', with the objective to contribute to the body of knowledge required for operationalizing the goal of ‘Good AI’ through a multi-stakeholder collaborative governance approach.
