Cartographies and configurations of Asian Studies in Portuguese and Spanish-speaking contexts

The Lecture

After presenting a historical panorama of the institutionalization of Asian studies in Portuguese and Spanish-speaking contexts, Dr. Claudio Pinheiro will examine one particular initiative committed to advancing Asian Studies in Latin America. Models of institutional initiatives will be discussed, focusing on the theoretical-critical production of the Global South, with a view to the question of scientific justice and the democratisation of knowledge.

The Speaker

Claudio Pinheiro is a professor of African and Asian Studies at the Institute of History at Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ) and Chair of Sephis (Amsterdam). He is a Visiting Professor Chair of Critical Studies and Transformation of Higher Education at Nelson Mandela University (South Africa). His research focuses on the study of slavery and forms of dependency, the history of knowledge production and circulation, focusing on the durable effects of colonialism on the institutionalization of power in Western and non-Western societies.
