Event — Masterclass

Between myth and history: the problem of the hierarchy of sources for the history of Srivijaya

This masterclass is taught by Professor Emeritus Pierre-Yves Manguin of the Ecole française d'Extrême-Orient. It is followed two days later by a public lecture in the Rijksmuseum by the same speaker, titled 'The kingdom of Śrīvijaya” after a century of research: achievements, new data, debates'.

This masterclass is aimed at students from different disciplines in the Humanities (including Archaeology) with a special interest in the topic.

Using data gathered for the study of the elusive polity of Srivijaya, the masterclass will discuss the issue of the hierarchy of sources for the ancient history of Indonesia. It will make a case for an approach combining textual, archaeological, and ethnographic sources and methodologies.

Registration (required)

Please register by 14 October using the web-form on the right-hand side of this page. To prepare for the masterclass, we will send you a digital syllabus, including some background readings.
