Von Siebold in Japan

Lecture by drs. Kris Schiermeier, director SieboldHuis. IIAS Outreach in cooperation with the Vereniging van Vrienden der Aziatische Kunst (VVAK, Asian Arts Society in the Netherlands) organizes a number of lectures pertaining to Asian Art.

Summary: Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866) arrived in Japan in 1823 where he was appointed as medical doctor on Deshima in Nagasaki. His great interest in flora and fauna of Japan and all other aspects of life in Japan lay at the basis of huge collection of Japanese artefacts was. A part of this collection is on show in the SieboldHuis in Leiden where von Siebold lived from 1832 to1845 but which was at the same time the first museum in Europe solely dedicated to Japan. Von Siebold is less known in Europe than in Japan where he is mentioned in every school book on the Japanese history as one of the most important foreigners who lived in Japan where he introduced Westersn medical science and surgery methods.
