Values of craft: the Indian case

How do we understand the role and significance of Intangible cultural heritage in our lives? What role does it play in the process of production of and consumption of crafts? What lenses are most appropriate as a means of making sense of the economics of crafts?
This lecture investigates these questions with a focus on the crafts in India. It begins with a look through the lenses of standard economics and continues with a culturalists perspective. It then applies the so-called value-based approach to resolve some paradoxes that emerge in the course of this study. The lecture concludes with recommendations for economists, craftspeople and policymakers based on a utopian perspective on the crafts in India.
Priyatej Kotipalli (1984) holds an M.B.A in Tourism and hospitality from Jawaharlal Technological University. He has a bachelor’s degree in Heritage Management from University of Mumbai. Prior to the commencement of his doctoral studies with Prof. Arjo Klamer, he was enrolled at the School of Business and Enterprise at Queen Margarete University (QMU), Scotland, United Kingdom. He was also a lecturer at the ITM Institute of Hotel Management where he was responsible for leading modules in strategic management and business consultancy.
Since his move to the Erasmus University (Rotterdam, Netherlands) he has been involved with the Centre for Research in arts and economics and the Foundation Economy and Culture. He has in the past served as a short term consultant with the World Bank and has lectured at leading Indian institutions such as the National Institute for Design and CEPT University. He has also been part of the core team to lead summer programs in culture and economics in Amsterdam, India, Uganda, Sri Lanka and Italy.
He is currently in the process of Co -editing (with dr. Anna Mignosa ) a book on the economics of craft titled the cultural economic perspective on crafts to be Published by Palgrave Macmillan.
