Event — Seminar

Urban Asia

A panel of architects and urbanists will discuss how Asian cities adapt in a rapidly changing world.

Asia’s increasing importance is transforming the way we see the world. The region’s rise to global importance is being fuelled by a number of interrelated factors, not the least of which is the massive waves of urbanization being seen in recent decades: China alone is experiencing the largest rural-urban migration the world has ever seen. How the cities of Asia are adapting to their new circumstances is something that will be examined in this workshop, from the rehabilitation and rescue of an old market building in Battambang, to the dizzying complexity of the walkway systems in downtown Hong Kong. This panel of architects and urbanists has been closely engaged with the cities of Asia, some for many years, and their explorations may help shed some light on what is happening to the cities in one of the world’s most rapidly changing regions.

Four individual presentations will be followed by a panel discussion. Reception afterwards in the garden (weather permitting).
