Transboundary environmental issues in Southeast Asia
International workshop
16-17 November 2006
Venue:
Academia Sinica,
Nangkang Taipei, Taiwan
The fact that colonial and recent history have left insular Southeast Asia with a complicated geo-political division, including seriously contested islands and parts of the open seas, has led to a number of complex transnational or transboundary environmental issues, all related to access to resources for exploitation and trade. Among these issues are the long pending case of illegal logging across the Indonesian and Malaysian borders, the management and protection of marine environments, and the illegal trade in protected species. The aim of this workshop is to critically discuss and analyze a number of current transboundary environmental problems and the ways that some governments and civil society organizations are trying to overcome these problems. Solutions are sometimes looked for through the international diplomatic forums, such as in the case of the haze problems and transnational conservation initiatives. In other cases nationalistic and protectionist types of behaviour prevail and seem to yield little or no improvement.
