Technology and Culture: Genetics and its Social and Ethical Implications in Asia and Europe

Technology and Culture

March 17-18, 2007
Century Park Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand

An Asia-Europe Workshop, supported by the European Alliance for Asian Studies and the Asia-Europe Foundation, to be held in conjunction with the Eighth Asian Bioethics Conference (ABC2007)

This workshop gathers scientists and scholars from Asia and Europe who are working in the new area of the social and ethical impacts of the genetics in Asia and Europe. As life sciences and biotechnologies have become thoroughly pervasive in today's world, with all the promises of ‘better life' that they purport to bring, there is also the problem of how these sciences and technologies are interrelated with the wider social and cultural contexts. Hence this concern overlaps with the traditional field of area studies, which seek to understand the social and cultural dynamics of a particular region, and is the rare field where very diverse academic disciplines work together as one unit.

The workshop will take place on March 17-18, 2007 at Century Park Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand, leading to the 8th Asian Bioethics Conference from March 19-23. It is organized by the Center for Ethics of Science and Technology, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University.
