The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the process of secularisation, with case studies from the Netherlands and Taiwan. Both societies have known a serious increase of secularisation. However, in the past few years new religious (Christian) movements in the Netherlands and a growing popularity of spirit medium movements in Taiwan seem to indicate that secularisation is on its return.
During the workshop scholars with different disciplinary backgrounds will present their perspective on this matter. Attention will be paid to, among others, new theoretical discourses, the social origin and forms of secularisation, new religious movements and spirituality, and historical developments.
