Ms Juvekar will speak on the rise of the offbeat/ New-Wave/ Indie cinema and regional films and the challenges it still faces. The international acclaim and success of films like Lunchbox, Fandry, Ship of Theseus, Good Road, Qissa is a sign of changing times for the independent cinema and is paving way for more such films. The filmmakers like Rajkumar Hirani, Dibaker Bannerjee, Anurag Kashyap have become the new faces of cinema which is meaningful/sensible and commercially viable too. In her talk, Ms. Juvekar will highlight the role NFDC plays in the growth and development of regional and New wave cinema by organizing screenwriter’s labs, funding and distributing independent films and giving them international exposure on a platform like Film Bazaar.
The speaker
Urmi Juvekar was actively involved in theatre since early years. Urmi then moved on to working in a television production house to make non-fiction programmes while writing her first feature film, Darmiyaan, which was released in 1998. Since then she has written six films including Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye and I AM- both winners of The National Award for best films and has made three documentaries. Her documentary ‘Shillong Chamber Choir and the little home school’ was shown in IDFA (Amsterdam) in 2008. She started working as a creative producer with the critically acclaimed and commercially successful film, Love, Sex aur Dhokha. Her latest film Shanghai, based on Vassilis Vassilikos’s Z, was released in 2012. Urmi has been involved with NFDC since 2011 as a consultant for Film Bazaar and script labs.
