Reshaping Globalizing City: Urban Renewal in Shanghai (1980-2012)

From 1980s to 2010s, a huge scale of urban renwal process have taken palce in Shanghai, the China’s ermerging global city, and reshaped not only the landscape but also the social structure of this mega-city. In Shanghai’s experiences, urban renewal was closely related with the spatial and social sustainability which were easily ignored in the researh perspective of urban sustainable development. This talk will analysis the characteristics of different stages of the redevelopment process, and make 3 cases study on typical Shanghai renewal projects include Xintiandi, Tianzifang and Expo 2010 area. Some key issues will be discussed: How to keep balance between reshaping inner city and building new towns in a emerging city? How to build up public-private partnership and modify the role of government in urban renewal? How to form an inclusive relocation mode and avoid unnecessary gentrification?
Every third Wednesday of the month one of the IIAS researchers will present his/her work-in-progress in an informal setting to their colleagues and other interested attendees, followed by a lunch provided by IIAS. These lunch lectures are organized to give the research community the opportunity to freely discuss ongoing research and to exchange thoughts.
