Seminar in memory of Prof. Widjojo Nitisastro and Prof. Sajogyo. By David Henley (Leiden University) and Ben White (International Institute of Social Studies).

In memory of Prof. Widjojo Nitisastro and Prof. Sajogyo

Lectures by David Henley and Ben White

Professor Widjojo Nitisastro and Professor Sajogyo were prominent intellectuals who played important roles in Indonesia’s rural development. Both passed away recently, on 9 March and 17 March 2012 respectively. As the architect of New Order Indonesia’s
economy, Widjojo designated the agricultural sector as the first priority. Sajogyo was the ‘father’ of rural development sociology in Indonesia. His studies resulted in many applicable concepts such as the poverty line, family nutrition, and agrarian reforms.

David Henley (Professor of Contemporary Indonesian Studies, Leiden University) will deliver a reflection on the legacies of Widjojo Nitisastro, who provided the macro-level framework for Indonesia’s rural development.
Ben White (Professor of Rural Sociology, International Institute of Social Studies) will reflect on the more micro-level ideas of Sajogyo.
