Reflections on the Idioms of distress concept
22/11/2007 - 10:00
22 November 2007
Lecture by Prof. Thomas Wenzel
Medical University of Vienna, Austria
Event within the context of the Cleveringa Programme 2007
"Idioms of Distress" has become a new common paradigm in transcultural medicine to characterise reactions that are used to describe stress or trauma related phenomena in a culture by avoiding medicalisation of terms. The concept at least partly has replaced the earlier model of "culture bound" syndromes, though the concepts are only partly overlapping in their focus and general approach.
The lecture is intended to explore the concept of "Idioms of Distress" in the context of different cultures and in its relationship to the development of structured research strategies through a group interaction and comparison of original sources. Models developed for the World Psychiatric Association Section will be discussed as part of the meeting.
