Event — IIAS lecture

The Production and Appreciation of the Chinese Lute & Discussion of the Lute collected by Robert Hans Van Gulik

Prof. Dr. Mei-Yen Lee & Prof. Dr. Willem van Gulik

The library of Sinology Institute on Thursday 14 December 2006, from 3.00 to 5.00 pm.

The Chinese lute was prized as the primary art of the Chinese scholar. When the U.S. spaceship Voyager was launched on August 22nd 1977, a gold CD of Chinese lute music was carried on board to introduce the music of humanity to the rest of the universe. In 2003, the Chinese lute was recognized by the United Nations as a part of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

What kind of musical instrument was the Chinese lute? How was the Chinese lute made? Why was the Chinese lute so valuable? Prof. Dr. Mei-Yen Lee will introduce the production and appreciation of the Chinese lute, and then Prof. Dr. Willem van Gulik will show the Chinese lute collected by Robert Hans van Gulik(1910 -1967A .D.) to display at the meeting place. This Chinese lute was made in the end of Ming dynasty (about 700 years ago).
