Lecture by Dr Elmira Nogoibaeva
(International Strategic Research Institute, Kyrgyzstan)
The Kyrgyz Republic acquired independence in 1991, following the disintegration of the USSR. How does this relatively new state look like today? What kind of nation/and identity-building processes go on in this country? This presentation addresses the problem of creating new democratic institutions that accompanies the transition from the Soviet collective communist system to the new individualistic liberal society. In her talk Elmira Nogoibaeva dwells upon the nature of the former President A. Akaev's rule, the so-called ‘Tulip Revolution' of March 2005 and the last parliamentary elections in December 2007 and gives her vision on the perspectives of Kyrgyzstan's development in a broader Central Asian context.
