The 2nd Annual DSD-IIAS Workshop on the Postcolonial Global City in Asia is intended as a multi-disciplinary event embracing the work of architects, urbanists, geographers, sociologists, political scientists, historians, Asian scholars, etc. Its geographical scope encompasses South, East and South-East Asia (including India, China, Japan, the Koreas, Indochina, Australasia and Micronesia).

Some of the themes that will be explored include how certain cities in Asia have made the successful segue from colonial nodes to global cities; the role of architectural typology, including housing typologies, and its role in the city’s identity, ethos, etc; the role of design in cities, especially with regard to urban management, environment, sustainability, etc; institutions of governance, the rule of law, and the role of language, etc; as well as non-Western models of social and commercial organisation (for example, tongs, hongs, bazaar or native economies, informal economies, illegal networks, etc.).
