National Human Rights Commissions in Indonesia and Malaysia
27/03/2008 - 15:30
27 March 2008
15.30 - 17.00 hrs
The Leiden Southeast Asia Seminar by drs. Ken Setiawan, Van Vollenhoven Institute, Faculty of Law, Leiden University.
While human rights are firmly grounded in international law, their realisation at national levels remains problematic. It is therefore not surprising that the United Nations have stimulated new, and sometimes unorthodox, approaches to promote human rights realisation. One of their most noteworthy initiatives has been their support for National Human Rights Institutions. In this seminar, Ken Setiawan will discuss two of these institutions in Southeast Asia; the National Human Rights Commission of Indonesia (Komnas HAM) and that of Malaysia (SUHAKAM). She will discuss the background of these agencies and their potential, as well as the main factors influencing their performance.
Ken Setiawan is a junior researcher at the Van Vollenhoven Institute, Faculty of Law, Leiden University. She is working on a PhD thesis concerning the human rights commissions of Indonesia and Malaysia.
Venue: KITLV, Room 138, Reuvensplaats 2, 2311 BE, Leiden
