These days each major festival in Europe seems to want to present its own discovery in the field of “intercultural contemporary multi media co-productions”. Since these projects are generally initiated and funded by western parties, the question is to what extent they are the outcome of an open and creative exchange between artists. Do intercultural productions further a genuine interest in the background and context of “the other”, or are cultural differences merely invoked as a way to attract more and maybe new audiences? Is cultural difference turned into a commodity? Do co-productions between western and non-western dance companies contribute to cultural diversity in our globalized world? Or will they in the end lead to more, western dominated, uniformity in contemporary dance? Who defines the terms for international cooperation, on the basis of which criteria?
