Moving forward: contemporary dance in China

Julidans, Amsterdam's summer festival of international contemporary dance, is about to start! From June 27 - July 8 some very special performances by the best up-and-coming international choreographers will be presented.

Julidans also aims to provide a platform for non-western dance and is delighted to present contemporary dance from China in this year's edition. Wen Hui's Living Dance Studio from Beijing will take part with its newest production Report on 37.8˚ while Zuhe Niao, physical theatre from Shanghai, will perform Tongue's Memory of Home. There will be guided walks with solo-performances in Amsterdam's Chinatown, choreographed by the Dutch-Malaysian choreographer Teck Voon Ng. For details and tickets please check www.julidans.nl.

In addition to presenting performances we also want to discuss dance in China - and it is with great pleasure that we invite you to the seminar Moving forward: contemporary dance in China. This seminar, which we organize together with Borneoco, Asia Studies in Amsterdam (ASiA, www.iias.nl/asia), the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS, www.iias.nl), and the Theater Instituut Nederland (www.tin.nl) will take place on

Friday, July 7, from 11-16 hrs at the Theater Instituut Nederland, Herengracht 168 in Amsterdam.

Bringing together dancers, dance critics, students, teachers and scholars, the seminar promises a truly interdisciplinary day on which we want to unpack the relevance of contemporary Asian dance with a particular focus on China.

Our guests from China are:
- Zhang Xian, playwright and director of Zuhe Niao, Shanghai
- Wen Hui, choreographer from the Living Dance Studio, Beijing
- Alison Friedman, international coordinator of the Beijing Modern Dance Company
- Yang Meiqi, pioneer in dance education in China and vice-president/dean of the Dance Department of the Guangdong Vocational College of Arts
- Yu Xiao, teacher at the Dance College of the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

The seminar will be hosted by dr. Sal Murgiyanto (associate professor at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts, who is also associated to the Taipei National University of the Arts and founder of the Indonesian Dance Festival), in cooperation with Yiufai Chow (journalist, lyricist and academic researcher based in Amsterdam).

From The Netherlands and Europe we have invited dance companies, dance- and theatre academies, universities, various organisations and funds that want to establish relationships with China. Of course there will be ample opportunity to take part in the discussion and to ‘network' during lunch and drinks.

Attendance is free, but registration for the seminar is required at julidans@ssba.nl before July 1st.
