Event — Film screening

Mothers

Screening of 'Mothers', a film by the famous filmmaker Milcho Manchevski is shown. Q&A with the director afterwards.

As part of  the exploratory, closed Roundtable: Building Social Cohesion through Culture in Conflict and Post-Conflict Contexts, the film 'Mothers' by the famous filmmaker Milcho Manchevski is shown. Q&A with the director afterwards.

A provocative three-part film about relationships - between men and women, truth and fiction, emotional and state power.  Like his Academy Award-nominated 'Before the Rain', this new brilliant feature is set in Macedonia, but clearly relevant to us all. As Piers Handling, Director of the Toronto Film Festival said: "’Mothers’ begins with fiction, indeed with the fabrication of a lie, moves on to an attempt at the fabrication of a myth and ends in the shattering imagery of the real, where no fabrication is possible".

A fiction/documentary fusion feature, screened at the Berlin and Toronto Film Festivals, winner of 7 international awards, Macedonia’s entry for the Academy Awards.

Background of the (closed) roundtable

In countries that experience, or recently have experienced civil conflicts it is of crucial importance to create conditions for a lasting period of tranquility built upon a new, or renewed sense of shared destiny and trust among the citizens. Social educators and creative cultural leaders, such as writers, filmmakers, teachers, artists, and journalists, can and should play a central role in creating and maintaining such a renewed feeling of cohesion. To this end the Roundtable will discuss people's views of themselves and others within the context of the post-conflict situation, and explore practical ways to support the emancipating role played by social educators, practitioners and cultural leaders, identifying concrete spaces of action and possible strategies to follow at both local and macro levels. Conflict-affected countries in Asia, Afrika and Europe will be discussed.

The Macedonian film maker Milcho Manchevski will contribute to the Roundtable with his film: Mothers.

The Roundtable is a joint initiative of  IIAS, Leiden, the Stichting Savan / Beeld voor Beeld, the Tropenmuseum Amsterdam and with the collaboration of the Prince Claus Fund and UNESCO Nederland.
