IIAS Outreach. In cooperation with the Vereniging van Vrienden der Azatische Kunst (V VA K, Asian Art Society in the Netherlands) IIAS organises a number of lectures pertaining to Asian Art in 2011.

Venue: Geelvinck Hinlopen Huis / Keizersgracht 633 / Amsterdam

Topic: Mahapratisara's itinerary through Asia

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Marijke Klokke (Leiden University)

Summary: In her lecture Marijke Klokke will focus on the spread of the worship of the Buddhist goddess Mahapratisara. On the basis of remaining text fragments and statues she will trace Mahapratisara's track from India to China both along the northern silk route and the southern sea route. In the ninth century Mahapratisara reached Java where she gained special significance as can be deduced from inscriptions and statues made out of stone or bronze.

These lectures are held in the historical Geelvinck Hinlopen Huis, a beautifully restored city palace dating from the end of the seventeenth Century. Entrance to these lectures is free of charge but you should register at vvak@denboerenvink.nl or via phone +31-182501696.
