The lecture
The role of the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (MSAR) as an international actor, has been carefully crafted based on historical connections with Europe and the Portuguese Speaking world, its ability to perform intermediation between China and the West and the cultural hybridism featured in its buildings, monuments and public spaces, as well as in the intangible distinct character, which together made of this city-region a UNESCO world heritage.
The speaker
José Luis de Sales Marques has been President of the Board of Directors of the Institute of European Studies of Macau (IEEM) since 1st January 2002. Previously he was the Mayor of Macau from 1993 to 2001.
Mr Marques has a degree in Economics from the University of Porto, a post-graduation in European Affairs from Université Libre de Bruxelles and a Master in European Studies from the University of Macau. He has been teaching in this programme on EU-Asia relations. His field of research includes international politics, Macau affairs, and urbanism.
He is trustee of the Cultural Industries Fund of the Macau SAR Government and of the Rui Cunha Foundation, a private foundation promoting legal knowledge, culture and the arts; and member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation of the Macau Portuguese School in representation of the Portuguese government, and current president of the World Council of Macanese Diaspora.
