This is a public seminar about the politics of representing the past as heritage in Southeast Asia. Two lectures by renowned heritage scholars will deconstruct the politics of heritage formation in Indonesia and Thailand. Prof. Bambang Purwanto (Universitas Gadjah Mada) will address tensions between the construction of national heritage and decentralization politics in contemporary Indonesia. Prof. Michael Herzfeld (Harvard University) will discuss the case of heritage and politics in Thailand. Topics that will be addressed include the concept of heritage as a process; the construction of heritage; the politics of representing the past, as well as the role of the state, governmental institutions, and local communities in making heritage.
