20/06/2007 (All day)

20 June 2007
15:30 hrs (with drinks at 17:00)

IIAS lecture by By Dr Chin Yee Whah (Universiti Sans Malaysia Affilated fellow IIAS)

Organised by KITLV and the International Institute of Asian Studies (IIAS)

Venue: KITLV, Reuvensplaats 2, 2311 BE, Leiden (Room 138)

The aim of the presentation is three-fold: (1) to describe the evolution of Chinese businesses in Malaysia from the colonial era to the present global capitalism. Chinese businesses have evolved from tin mining and rubber growing and extended into commodity production, banking and finance, construction and property development, manufacturing industry, and advance technology manufacturing; (2) to explain the evolution of intra-ethnic and Chinese family-based businesses to inter-ethnic and plural forms of enterprises as they adapt to government policies that favor the indigenous people; and (3) to describe the responses of Chinese entrepreneurs to the increasing challenges of the global economy. By looking into these three aspects, the lecture discusses how Chinese entrepreneurship in Malaysia has evolved over time.
