Lunch is provided, registration is required.
The IIAS Southeast Asia Neighborhoods Network (SEANNET) is a network of scholars and professionals studying neighborhoods in Southeast Asian cities, through a mix of participatory field-research, in situ policy roundtables, local capacity building exercises, and academic conferences. Through its work on neighborhoods, the network ultimately aims to come up with new forms of knowledge about cities in the region, culminating among others in innovations and new material for pedagogy in the field of urban studies.
SEANNET is keen to reach out to other networks and initiatives working at the neighborhood level, including in other parts of the world, to learn from their experience and collaborate. In this lunch lecture, we give the floor to:
The City at Eye Level is an initiative of STIPO, a team for interdisciplinary urban development, based in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Thessaloniki and operating worldwide. STIPO’s core partners include UN-Habitat, Project for Public Spaces, and the Centre for the Future of Places. It has a worldwide network of many local partners with whom it works together based on locally rooted knowledge.
The City at Eye Level seeks to promote human-centered cities and help trigger an Asian network for human scale architecture, public spaces, streets, neighborhoods and cities, and pedestrian-friendly streets:
“great streets, places where you intuitively want to stay longer, human scale interaction between buildings and streets, ownership by users, place-making and good plinths (active ground floors), and a people-centered approach based on the user's experience”.
In this presentation, Hans Karssenberg and Siënna Veelders from STIPO will talk about The City at Eye Level’s growing activities in Asian cities—following decades of working in Europe, North America and Latin America—and the specific challenges encountered in the Asian context in the quest to achieve human-centered neighborhoods and cities.
“The past decades have seen unprecedented urban growth in Asian cities. More than ever there is a need for clever and creative solutions that champion the human scale in planning and are collaborative and participatory in nature. Responding to increasing demand from urban practitioners across Asia for best practice case studies and examples, The City at Eye Level is expanding in Asia. We have several emerging themes developed in ground level city planning in Asia: informal urban design, placemaking, regeneration of older neighborhoods, street markets and arcades, ‘mall’ city, street art, and public space in housing estates. The City at Eye Level Asia hopes to bring the Asian and Western urban worlds together and build bridges”.
